Reader’s Question:

How much car insurance should I get in the state of Iowa?

John

Des Moines, IA

The minimum Iowa liability insurance is required in Iowa. You need to carry $20,000 for bodily injury per person, $40,000 for bodily injury per accident and $15,000 for property damage per accident.

The Iowa liability insurance coverages of Bodily Injury and Property Damage cover the damages you cause to others in an accident.

Although you are only required to carry the minimum insurance limits that your state require it is usually in your best interest to higher Liability insurance with higher limits. If in case of accident and a person is seriously injured and their medical expenses exceed your limits you could be paying out thousands of dollars out of your own pocket and have your assets at risk to pay for the medical expenses.

Basically, the amount of car insurance that you want to buy depends on your own personal situation and car insurance needs. If you can afford a higher limits and other optional coverage offered by insurance companies, the better, so you are fully covered.
